What is Endodontic Retreatment?
There are a number of factors that could cause problems following root canal therapy. Sometimes, the whole infection wasn't removed during treatment, or in other cases, a new disease could have formed in the tooth. When a tooth reveals signs of a disease for the second time, we will likely recommend endodontic retreatment. Similar to the first root canal treatment, endodontic retreatment is used to clean the tooth canals and eliminate the disease. If you are still having pain or signs of infection following your root canal, schedule an exam at Downtown Dental Partners – Boston, MA, to decide if you will need endodontic retreatment.

"I was in an emergency situation and needed immediate care. Had a painful infection in an important tooth holding my bridge in place. I have rheumatoid arthritis and was facing an infusion of a powerful biological medication the next day which lowers the immune system. I had never seen Dr Canesi before though my husband happily had been his patient for years. The doctor took me in, eased the pain and gave me a referral for needed Endodontist to complete the job and hopefully save my tooth. I love this dental practice and the compassion and professionalism of Dr Canesi and his entire staff. Thank you for calming my fears and taking such good care of of me. Do I Need Endodontic Retreatment?
You may be an ideal candidate for endodontic retreatment if you have received a root canal but are still experiencing signs of an infection in your tooth. The most frequent sign of infection is discomfort or pain in the tooth that had a root canal treatment. If endodontic retreatment isn't possible, tooth extraction or apicoectomy may be suggested. During your consultation at our Boston, MA, office, we will go over the most appropriate plan of action to treat the disease and save your tooth if possible.
What to Expect From Endodontic Retreatment
Endodontic retreatment is performed in our office with a local anesthetic to temporarily numb the treated region. If the procedure is going to be extensive or if you have dental fears, other sedation options may be used. As soon as you are prepped, endodontist Dr. Yasmine Basseghi or one of our other highly educated dentists will open the tooth and remove the filling material placed during your root canal. The interior of your tooth, including the root tips, will be thoroughly washed, sanitized, strengthened with a new filling, then sealed. A dental restoration (bridge or crown) is usually placed over the treated tooth for extra protection and strength.
Recovering From Endodontic Retreatment
Following your endodontic retreatment, it may be wise to take a few days to rest and recover. Someone from our team will go over a few tips that will help you heal after your procedure, including how to best clean your mouth. You may be given a prescription for antibiotics or pain relievers. Once your gums have recovered, you should follow a great oral hygiene routine with daily flossing and brushing, in addition to yearly examinations and biannual cleanings at Downtown Dental Partners – Boston, MA, so we can monitor the treated tooth and your overall oral health.
Insurance Coverage for Endodontic Retreatment
Depending on the degree of your procedure and sedation choice, your insurance coverage can vary. Before your procedure, we'll contact your insurance provider to figure out what will be covered and if there'll be any additional expenses. If you don't have dental insurance, Downtown Dental Partners – Boston, MA, accepts many payment methods and we are happy to speak with you about finding medical financing.
